There are no opportunities for extra credit in this course.

I will retain all graded materials for this course until the end of next semester (Spring 2015). If you wish to review them, please come to see me during office hours (or make an appointment).

Assignments: I will assign problem sets, programming assignments, or other exercises about once a week. They will be posted to assignments section of the website. They will usually be posted sometime on Friday, and be due at 1700 the following Friday. You will typically submit them by placing the required file(s) in a subdirectory of the the cs383 course directory on your Edlab account; the assignments page has more information. Late assignments will not be accepted. If you need an extension, contact me a reasonable amount of time before the assignment is due. Each assignment will be equally weighted, unless otherwise noted.

Class Exercises: In addition to assignments, you will be assigned exercises in class. Some of these exercises will be assigned for you to complete individually, and some will be assigned to groups. You will be able to use your book, notes, etc., when working these problems. Each day’s class exercise will be equally weighted.

Exams: There will be three term exams and a cumulative final exam. You may not bring supplemental material to the exam, that is, they are closed-book, and the use of notes, calculators, computers, etc., is forbidden.

Attendance: I expect you to attend class having done the assigned reading, and to come to scheduled exams.

  • If you will be absent (either from class, or from an exam) due to religious reasons, you must provide me with a written list of such dates within one week of your enrollment in the course.
  • If you will be absent for a University-related event, such as an athletic event, field trip, or performance, you must notify me as soon as possible.
  • If you are absent for health reasons, I expect you to notify me as soon as possible.
  • If you are absent for other extenuating non-academic reasons, such as a military obligation, family illness, jury duty, automobile collision, etc., I expect you to notify me as soon as possible.

If you must miss an exam for an excusable reason, I will work with you to find an acceptable time for you to take a makeup exam. If you miss an exam without prior notice, I will require an explanation and possibly written documentation in order to judge whether the absence is excusable.

Incompletes: Incompletes will be granted only in exceptional cases, and only if you have completed at least half the course. Prior to that, withdrawal is the recommended course of action.

Academic Honesty: Please read the UMass Academic Honesty Policy.

Copying of solutions to exams or assignments is forbidden. Teamwork on an assignment (written or programming) is forbidden, unless otherwise specified. Copying or re-writing existing code and submitting it as part of the solution to a programming assignment is also forbidden, unless expressly permitted in the text of the assignment. This behavior falls under the University’s definition of academic dishonesty. If you are unsure whether a particular action will constitute academic dishonesty, then check with me before pursuing it.

Academic dishonesty is usually the result of other problems in school. Please come see me or the TA anytime if you are unable to keep up with the work for any reason and we will work something out. I want to see you succeed! The TA and I will bend over backwards to help you, but we will not tolerate academic dishonesty.

If you engage in academic dishonesty, you will almost certainly receive an F for the course. Further, if there are formal disciplinary proceedings, I will lobby for the maximum possible penalty.

Investigating academic dishonesty is an unpleasant experience for both the instructor and the student. Please help me by avoiding any questionable behavior.

Other Academic Regulations: The Office of the Registrar publishes Academic Regulations yearly. You should be familiar with them. Particularly relevant are the policies on attendance, absences due to religious observance, and examinations.
