Joie Wu
CS PhD Student @ UMass Amherst

I'm a 1st year PhD student in Computer Science at UMass Amherst. I work with Ina Fiterau. I am interested in building intelligent systems that can actually reason with data. This includes topics such as multi-modal fusion, transfer learning, and curriculum learning. The problems I am currently working on originate from the medical domain, working with clinical study datasets that contain a treasure trove of multi-modal data collected over many years!

Other topics I am interested in include: algorithmic fairness, categorical informatics, and string diagrams.

I obtained my B.S in Computer Science and Mathematics from Temple University. During my time at Temple, I had the pleasure of being mentored by Vasily Dolgushev: we worked together on Bar Natan's conjecture on Vassiliev knot invariants, and Bo Ji, with whom I worked on network scheduling algorithms with.

I also briefly worked with Dr. Anne Ngu on IoT research during my REU at Texas State University.
