Hi, I am Sheikh Muhammad Sarwar and I am currently pursuing MS/PhD at the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences at UMass Amherst. I will be joining Amazon Alexa Shopping Science team as a full-time Applied Scientist. I work as a research assistant at the Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval (CIIR) and Professor James Allan is my advisor. I started MS/Phd in August, 2016 and since then I have worked on SearchIE - an NSF funded project, MATERIAL - IARPA funded project and BETTER - IARPA funded Project. I have interned at Amazon Query Understanding (Manager: Dr. Danqing Zhang ), Amazon Alexa Shopping Science (Manager: Dr. Vanessa Murdock ), and Checkstep (Manager: Professor Isabelle Augenstein and Professor Preslav Nakov ).

Short Research Statement

I develop novel retrieval and classification approaches under the constraint of zero labeled data in target domain. Specifically, I try to build models that incorporate target domain vocabulary distribution into the training process with source domain labeled data. I also study weak supervision approaches to generate noisy data and investigate techniques to leverage them effectively in model training process. My github and Google Scholar.

Updates

  • Hopefully, I will start an internship with Amazon A9 Search Team in Fall 2020.
  • Toward Neural Cross-Lingual Information Retrieval has been accepted for publication in SIGIR '20.
  • Query by Example for Cross-Lingual Event Retrieval has been accepted for publication in SIGIR '20.
  • Successfully finished my internship at Amazon Alexa Shopping Science team under the supervision of Dr. Vanessa Murdock.
  • I attended ICTIR 2019 from October 1 - October 7, 2019 to present two papers show how information extraction can be formulated as a information retrieval problem.
  • Sucessfully presented my poster in ACL '19, Florence, Italy. Really enjoyed the social program.
  • I am a Phd Candidate now!
