Another approach is to Matt's dilemma is just to decrease airframe drag.
Ultimately you just go around in ever diminishing circles chasing the
perfect fuel load and burn and I happen to think at some point it's
better just to live with it.

Or more ... an example of clever and deliberate underpowering and
underweighing is an appealing new Beech18a by Bill Lyons from Golden
Wings. This a/c (file beech18a1.zip) has only 88 virtual ponies per c/f
the prototypical values of ~320 per, and a correspondingly light weight.
To fly with this absurdly low BHP value the airframe has almost no drag
to speak of but flies very nicely indeed - for the most part. In this
lovely little a/c the trade-off is when the model fails to wash off
speed speed during approach. To overcome the light airframe weight and
drag you need to edit these drag numbers to be much, much higher.

The a/c flies like a dream for the most part but needs much more BHP.
200 per side seems to work pretty well in this case, with some extra
drag, but it won't go far on the designer's fuel load :)
