If you are getting the "joystick not connected" message here is the fix.
Use single mode DMA:
Go to control panel
double click multi media
on the advnaced tab, double click audio devices
click the "Audio for..." that matches your sound card, then click
"Properties". (To determine your sound card, go to control panel, double
click the system icon, click on device manager, arrow down to the "sound and
video game controllers, click on the plus to the left of "sound and video
and game controllers and it will change to a minus. Below the the sound and
video game controllers section you will see what your audio card is : e.g.
ESS 1887)
Click settings
Click on the Use Single Mode3 DMA check box to select it
Click all the ok's to get out.\
Re boot.

This is a fix from MS and its worked for many. Hope it works for you!!!
