Boy, I should charge for this. I can't tell you how many guys I have sent
this to! Hope it works for you!~

Symptom
(When connecting a Microsoft SideWinder gaming device to a computer that is
using a sound card with an ESS chip set, the Game Controllers tool in
Control Panel may report a status of Not Connected. In addition, while
playing a game, the joystick may stop responding).

Resolution
Use Single Mode DMA. To do so, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Multimedia.
3. On the Advanced tab, double-click Audio Devices.
4. Click the Audio for entry that corresponds to your sound card, and
then click Properties.
To determine youre sound card click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, and
double click on the System icon.
Click on Device Manager and arrow down to the Sound Video and Game
Controllers section. Click on the Plus to the left of Sound Video and Game
Controllers, and it will change to a Minus. Below the Sound Video and Game
Controllers section you will see youre Audio card, for example ESS1887.
5. Click Settings.
6. Click the Use Single Mode DMA check box to select it.
7. Click Ok until you return to Windows.
8. Restart the computer.
