Direct X 6 ships with a Direct X debugger which goes through your drivers,
and lists whether they
are all there, whether they have been Microsoft verified or not, and lists
of potential conflicts.
I had much problem with Win 95 and DirectX 5, and even Direct X 5 that was
installed with
a clean up grade to Win98 had components missing according to the de-bugger.
I installed Direct X 6,
downloaded the latest approved drivers and the system is now very stable.

The debugger is under c:\Program Files\DirectX\
