You do not have to go to these extreme lengths. The problem is an 
incompatibility with the new glide drivers in DirectX 6.

All you have to do is place an old version of the glide2x.dll file 
(v2.53 from DirectX 5) in your GPL directory, this will allow GPL to 
work with DirectX 6, and all other programs will use the newer version 
of the file.
