Why not check at the source? Watkins Glen now has a Motor Racing Research
Library attached to the village library. This may be the first library of
it's kind in the world, certainly the first in the USA. It was built with
a combination of donations and some grant money from New York State.

The collection is already pretty amazing -- a good place to go for a
vacation -- just hole up in the stacks, read and look at the photo
collection. When you need to stretch, the Watkins Glen (gorge) State Park
(~23 waterfalls in 1.5 miles of stairs and rock trails) is just down the
road, by the start line for the original 1948 street circuit.

They have a web site (but I've forgotten the url). You should be
able to find it from the Watkins Glen International site (the current
race track is owned by NASCAR).

Perhaps a more practical suggestion is to look in the new picture history
book that was just published, it celebrates 50 years of racing at the Glen.
I should be standing at the bottom of the tower/bridge at the start line--I
think that's where I watched part of that year's race from...
