Just a shot in the dark, but I've got a similar system to you, except 
I've got directx5 installed (heard too many problems with directx6 so 
I'm still waiting till they iron em out!)

You could try going back to directx5? There is a utility out there 
that allows you to go back to directx 5 (not sure where from though?)
