You can add any type of new controller to the game controller list as 
follows....

Make sure you have Directx5 (to get the new "game controllers" 
program in control panel which replaces the old "joystick" one), and 
go to control panel, game controllers, add, custom (at the top of the 
list), tick 2 axis (unless you are using separate axis for the 
pedals, in which case you should select three axis), select 4 buttons 
(unless you only want to use 2 buttons?), tick special 
characteristics, and tick "is a race car controller", type in a name, 
say "F1 Sim" and click ok.

Then from the list of controllers select the newly added "F1 Sim", 
select properties, select calibrate, and away you go.....
