Sigh. I'll make one last attempt and then give it up.

Several times, in response to assertions that unexpected things *do*
happen on short final or in the flare you said:

So you respect us but think we don't do a very good job of looking
out the window :-)

"It won't happen to me". What happend to the "I'm scared

It's not that big of a move if you're not under stress. Hands up
all of you who have never grabbed the mixture knob by mistake.

On the animal front alone I can assure you that it does happen. I
learned to fly at Gray Army Airfield in Ft. Lewis, WA and coyotes
often ran out of the woods and across the taxiway right in front
of landing traffic. We did all light aircraft ops on the taxiway
since the main runway was used by the heavy jets.

Since we were landing on the taxiway, the woods were closer than
they might have been otherwise, but many rural strips are not
too dissimilar. You could *not* see them while in the pattern.
You could not predict when they would appear. On one landing
I did need the throttle to extend over a coyote. It only
happened once, but once is enough to belie your statement.

No one thinks you hold on with both hands for very long,
there is just no point in doing it at all and your response
to assuming the (albeit limited) risk is: "It won't happen
to me because I'm planning ahead".

It isn't the holding on with two hands that is so dangerous,
it's the thought process you are using to defend it.

What we practice, Stephen, is both avoidence and recovery. We
are taught to avoid stalls, but we are also taught to recover
from them. Why are we taught to recover from stalls when
avoidance will assure that we never get into them? Because
avoidance alone is not enough to guarantee that an unintentional
stall will never happen.

As I and others have said before, the throttle is used for many
things during landing - not just to initiate a go-around.

Have you read the circular, Stephen? I'm curious.

Rick
