It gives me comfort to directly communicate with someone
in a situation like that because then I hear *from them*
that they recognize that there is another plane in a
potentially conflicting situation with them. It means I
know (or can be relatively assured, anyway) that their
eyes are open and that they are situationally aware.

Since I'm about to pull onto the runway and turn my back
on them, knowing that they've got the big picture is a
good thing.

That's different than broadcasting in the blind over CTAF,
where you simply assume that other radio-equipped planes
in the area hear you. Obviously, one would make the
appropriate CTAF announcements as well. I don't want anyone
to think I was advocating not doing that.

I hear that. In some ways, I really prefer flying in
nice summer IFR conditions in the clouds. :-)
