I had the same reaction.  Roadwing, you might want to reconsider..
overflying midfield 500-1000 ft above TPA is a very standard technique
to assess the wind direction before circling back to enter downwind. 
Crossing midfield at TPA is a standard pattern entry in Canada,
Bahamas apparently, and is common local practice at a number of
fields around here.  If you're climbing out of TPA as you cross
midfield esp. in a high wing plane, it's going to be very difficult
for you to see traffic overflying above TPA.  If you're in a low
wing plane, it's going to be very difficult for you to see traffic
overflying at TPA.  Traffic in both these locations is to be expected.

If you're going to turn crosswind, and then downwind, why not just
continue on downwind, make a climbing turn to base, then keep going?
