There is a story similar to this on the latest issue of AOPA (maybe even
your story). His license was what they called "emergency revoked". You are
grounded without due process and have to get re-certified, tests and all,
to get it back. Apparently a rare action from the FAA. The kicker was that
the violator was an ATP and blantantly disregarded ATC's requests.
