Just a comment, Jim, but you've mentioned flying approaches
and being in clouds so I assume you are instrument rated, or
working on the rating.  You've also mentioned picking up icing.

That being the case, is nursing a battery really a good place
to save money?

If you can't depend on the battery to start the plane, esp. after
it's all warm and charged from a flight, can you depend upon it
for a backup source of power?

If you lose the alternator IMC, you'll be depending on your
battery for a lot of stuff to get you home safe, including
pitot heat and navigation.  A handheld transciever is all very
well, and so is a handheld GPS, but it's tough to shoot an
approach w/ either.  And neither will keep your airspeed alive.

Batteries not that expensive, esp. relative to a fill-up in that
nice stable gas drinker you fly.
