I can't argue with that judgement.  The only reason I asked to 
practice slips under the hood was because the issue of "if we need
an emergency descent here, what do we do?" came up in real life
for us.  So it was on my mind.

I don't think it's particularly difficult to control the plane in
a slip, particularly one which is well above stalling speed (at
Vfe), but the instruments look very different, and at first I had
to keep telling myself "this is how I want them to look".  I think
the entry and exit are more important too, it's disorienting to just
kick it in, the technique of "coordinated turn then opposite aileron"
is probably best.

I agree though, I wouldn't want "on the job practice" for my first
try.
