You'll never persuade the Mooses of the world.  Beat 'em.

Carry a leatherman tool.  Open the pliers on either side of the
ridge on the oil cap and push on the handles.  For extra-tough
oil caps (those tighened by a Moose when the engine was already
hot), use a rag to pad the handles and use both hands.

I've heard the Tool comes in handy when the fuel selector handle
comes off with the fuel valve in between tanks.  I haven't 
experienced that joy yet.
