Very worthy, but...

Suppose in that rental plane, you have an engine failure.  And
suppose you wisely act to conserve altitude, and do it a little
too well such that you find yourself spiralling over an airport
to lose altitude.

Now suppose you misjudge the wind and your glide angle such
that you're way high on final.  You put in full flaps, it's
not enough, you're still way high.  People say "you can always
lose altitude", well, now's the time!

Whatcha gonna do?  You know the maneuver, you slip!  But you
already added flaps...now what?  Slip with flaps?  Dump the
flaps?  Will a couple S-turns be enough?  Decisions!  Decisions!

Or, suppose your avionics stack is filling the cockpit with
smoke at 8,000 ft.  You want on the ground, any ground, PRONTO!
How do you achieve the maximum descent rate while minimizing
the time to a minimum-airspeed touchdown?  Decisions!  Decisions!

Wouldn't it make more sense to go up to a nice altitude some 
day, and 'experiment' with that rental and a maneuver which is
not prohibited, to see what it can do for you?
