I start the plane with the alternator side of the master off,

Reason for doing this is, prior to start the alternator field
places a significant load on the battery.  Could be the difference
between a start and no start when the battery's cold.  Then after
start, there's an unambiguous positive indication as the alternator
replaces the juice used by the start.

Could I forget to turn the alternator on, yes, but then my plane
gets started on the L mag only so it's just part of the routine
(plane starts, Mags both Alt on).  But I used to do this in Cessnas
also.

At a bet, your CFI won't like it but you asked what others do!
