Well, I can tell you what I'd probably do, which is slow down
to a speed with a nice wide comfortable margin over stall,
so I'd burn less fuel but not require the attention (or restrict
my visibility) like flying at maximum endurance speed.

Something like "approach level" or about 90 kts. At 65 or 70 kts
in level flight, in most planes all I see in front of me without
flaps is a lot of cowling. Wouldn't help me find an airport.

It's a perfectly valid point anyway.
