Just as a comment here, some engines will promptly throw any
oil over a certain level out the breather tube onto the belly
of the aircraft, but below that level will burn oil at a 
slow and respectable 10-12 hrs/qt. or 0.1 qt/hr.

So if one knows one's engine, it's not really "playing around"
with the engine and your butt.

Example: my Lyc 0-360 has an 8 qt sump.  I keep the oil level 
between 6 and 6 1/2 qts and it might drop to 5 3/4 qts during a
4 hr trip if I start at 6.  Lycoming claims it will run on 2 qts 
minimum.  So if I had 2 1/2 qts in there, yeah, I'd be playing 
with my engine and my butt.  

But the only thing more oil than 6 1/2 qts is playing with, is
my wallet and my mind (as I'd wonder why my engine is burning oil
at such a horrendous rate).
