I'm not Greg Travis, but it's 12 years.  Lycoming also has a
mandatory service bulletin recommending that the valves be
checked for excessive exhaust valve guide wear every 400 hrs.
Are either necessary?  I guess it depends upon who you talk
to.  We just did the latter and found a worn valve guide at
400 SMOH on a 4 year old engine.

Certainly some engines with regular care and perhaps a top
overhaul (replacing cylinders) go well beyond 12 years.

But I suspect these are engines which fly regularly, even if
it's only a couple of hours a week, nearly every week.

Exception: if the engine was "pickled" when not in use
(placed in storage with either special solvent and moisture
absorbant plugs or dunked in oil)
