I'm not an "experienced" pilot, but thought I'd throw this in anyway. In
addition to the usual criteria, my CFI said (and his words were backed
up by my DE) that if possible to look for a roughly T or L shaped field
so that in case I'm high or overshoot I still have an option. My first
three CFI's never mentioned that.

Otherwise, hit the softest, cheapest thing you can find as slowly as
possible. =8-)
