The advice I was given is that *time* since overhaul is every bit
as important as hours since overhaul; basically, that if it hadn't
flown at least 50-100 hrs every year since overhaul walk away.

FWIW.  Other opinions may vary.

That restriction cut out a lot of planes.

Hmmmmm.....Cherokees and C172s are fairly common planes.  Have
you tried looking around and asking mechanics at FBOs at every 
airport within a hundred mile radius?  Often mechanics will know
if someone is considering selling their plane, and have an
opinion on whether it's a basically sound one (though you always
want to have the prepurchase done by a mechanic who isn't maintaining
it).

It's a heck of a lot easier to handle the process if it's local
and if nothing else it'll give you a start at hunting out the
mechanics you might like to deal with.

Y'know, when the weather's been ookie, "damn, I took 49 hrs to
solo" is *not* the comment which occurs to me.  Keep with it,
and don't ever be discouraged.  All of those hours mean something.
