You'd probably do a lot less "fiddling" if you'd just accept the fact 
that pitch (not power) controls airspeed.

Next time you're flying, try a simple experiment.  Establish the 
airplane in a hands-off trimmed, stable, straight and level cruise.  Note 
your airspeed.  

Now, reduce power to idle WITHOUT TOUCHING TRIM OR ELEVATOR.  What happens 
to the airspeed?
