Might I suggest that in addition, a call to the Designated Examiner
you will use might be prudent?  If the DE thinks you need a solo
sign-off and you don't have one, then you aren't going to take your
checkride on that day with that DE regardless of what the FSDO and 
your CFI say.

FWIW, my DE checked to see that I had a current solo sign-off and
that I wasn't exceeding any of my solo limitations during the checkride.

As of the current revision of Part 61 (a year+ ago), unambiguously yes.
Previously, a matter of interpretation.
