You will have to ask them.

The basic rule is that you have to fly high enough to make a safe 'forced
landing' if something goes wrong.  Next, you must keep at least 500 ft
away from any person or structure (including boats on the water).   And
the next 'step' up is 1000 ft above any congested area or obstruction (such as
a radio tower.

You said 100 yards off the flight line.  Is this parallel or across the runway
and is it a controlled or uncontrolled field?

The way this works is that once you get your PPL you will be able to be 
'checked out' in any 'similar' plane in just an hour or two---basically long 
enough for the owner to be assured that you can handle it.  The FAA, however,
differentiates between 'simple low power' and 'complex high power' aircraft.
'High power' means more than 200 horsepower, usually with adjustable prop.
Complex refers to, among other things, retractable landing gear.  To fly
these you will need additional training of several hours.
