sorta related to the thread:

A friend of mine was an ex-military Nam-era chopper pilot (medevac *and*
cobras) who flew the chopper for the TV station I used to work for. He
was awesome. We used to go out on search and rescue stuff a lot to add
two more sets of eyes at the request of local law enforcement, plus we'd
let a deputy ride with us as we looked for lost kids, etc. When we had a
deputy who seemed a bit worried about flying, Jim had a (nasty but fun)
habit of doing a very, very shaky transition on takeoff, dragging the
skids a bit, flying sideways and wobbling uncharacteristically. He'd
turn to me in the back and say "how am I doing?" and I'd say "looking
good this time, Jim" and then he'd turn to the deputy on his left and
say "this is my third takeoff by myself in a helicopter...if I don't
crash one again they'll give me my license."

The unlucky deputy would usually spend the next hour riding without
blinking.

cheers,
victoria
