You need to see the running lights on the wing tips.

Also a lot of hazard lights are red.

And what about the PAPI/VASI lights(white vs red vs amber)? 
Runway vs taxiway (white vs blue)?

I guess what they are interested in is that you can see a color difference.
If you can see a difference in the colors you can memorize what they are
and get along (like me seeing the green lights as 'sort of washed out
pastel pink').  To be restricted to day only you would have to be almost
completely color blind---at least a lot worse than the majority of us.
