I have used both. My first CFI had a set of the King video, which he loaned
to students.

I am now studying for my written test as I work towards my cross country
lessons, so I bought the Sporty's series

The only ones I have experience with are the King written exam videos and the
Sporty's PPL course. The Sporty's Recreational course is the same, except
for the cross-country part.

Here is my opinion:

The King written exam video covers what you need to know to pass the written
test and not much else. They essentially go over every question on the test.
The problem is that they teach you _what_, when I also want to know _why_.
It is essentially a crash course (pun _definetly_ not intended) for the
written exam. Some of the video graphics is good, however. Cost is $169.
To get to the actual flying you will have to send them another hunk of cash.

The Sporty's PPL video course covers not only the written test, but is also
a complete course. They show you a lot about the actual flying part of
getting your PPL, and throw in a lot of other useful and interesting tidbits.
They also go into much more detail on a lot of topics, such as weather and
navigation. There is a lot more in-air footage Besides, it is more
professionally done, in my opinion. It is a _complete_ course for the same
price, $169.
