| What are the advantages of an automatic over a
|manual? What are the possible drawbacks?

Typical manual advantages: less expensive to buy, uses less fuel,
car goes faster, more control down hills (engine braking).

Typical automatic advantages: can drive without needing both legs
and both arms (e.g. if you have an arm in a cast), more
convenient in stop and go traffic.

|Secondly, I hear people (and car testers in Consumer Reports, etc) making
|comments like "go for a four-speed instead of the three-speed" without
|explaining the reasons why. Why do they write that a 4-speed is better
|than a 3-speed?

Usually, the greater number of speeds allows closer ratios and/or
a higher top gear. Closer ratios allow better acceleration and/or
more optimal choice of gear for a given speed, while a higher top
gear reduces fuel usage and engine noise at highway speeds.
