I have very similar problem with my 88 Buick LeSabrae. First I thought
it was due to a worn engine mount. I changed 4 engine mounts and the
noise still there. Then I noticed that the car was wracked before and
some poor body parts alignment was done. It's like an oil can effect.
When the car's motion generate a pulling force to the left body part it
tends to cause a buckling sound loudly. I think this probably has to do
with the so called monoquoqo or unibody design of the new cars.
