I have a 1989 Ford Sierra 2.0. A few weeks after my last service (6mo ago)
the car began to very occasionally misfire / backfire. If I pressed the gas
pedal the revs would drop and the car would eventually cut out. Usually
starting the engine up again would cure the problem until it happened again a
few days later. I initially thought it was maybe a blockage in the exhaust but
I've had it replaced and the problem persists (in fact I wonder if the problem
caused the hole in my exhaust downpipe). I suspect now that its an electrical
problem, as a few weeks ago my alternator failed and the misfire / backfire
became constant and much worse, making the car undriveable. When the
alternator was fixed the misfire went back to its occasional basis.

Any ideas on what it may be?

Cheers
