UMass: a uniquely collaborative environment

In the UMass Amherst Department of Computer Science, we have a highly collaborative research environment that crosses the traditional boundaries of computer science. This is reflected in mutual research grants, publications, co-advising of students, and, most importantly, an atmosphere of collegiality and intellectual exchange of ideas. This atmosphere gives our students the opportunity to explore many areas in depth, and makes UMass an ideal place for students with broad interests in computer science.

In this graph, each node is a faculty member, and each edge represents at least one co-authored paper or grant proposal in the last five years. The average degree of collaboration is 6.6; that is, each faculty member has recently collaborated with around 6 others.

Many of these collaborations arose from our unique synthesis projects, a requirement of our PhD. program. Synthesis projects involve PhD. students in writing a conference-quality research paper with two faculty members from different research areas. The faculty members are colored with their traditional areas: red = AI, blue = Systems, and black = Theory.
