Assignment #24: Given in class Monday 28
November; due in class Wednesday 30 November. Since E&C have
given the answers for all the exercises in Appendix B, I have
made up my own questions.
- B.1: Given the matrices A and B on page 621, which of
the products AB and BA, if either, is defined? Compute any
of the products that are defined.
- B.2: Suppose I have a collection of vectors of
length 3, and in each the second number equals the third.
Show that if I take any linear combination of these vectors,
the second number of the result will equal the third.
- B.3: A permutation matrix has exactly one 1
entry in each row and exactly one 1 entry in each column,
with the rent of the entries 0. (The identity matrix is an
example of a permutation matrix.) Show that the product of
any two n by n permutation matrices is another permutation
matrix.
- B.4: Suppose that v is a row vector of length 3 and
that A is a 3 by 3 matrix. Show that if the product vA is
the zero vector of length 3, then A cannot have an inverse.
- B.5: Let A be any m by n matrix of real numbers.
Show that neither the matrix product AAT nor the
matrix product ATA can have a negative entry on
its main diagonal.
