Errata in the Textbook
This is a list of errors discovered in the Spring 2012 (yellow)
version of Discrete Mathematics: A Foundation for Computer
Science,
chapters 1-5, 9, 14, and 15.
- Volume 1, Chapters 1-4
- Page 0: The syllabus gives the incorrect lecture classroom
-- the correct lecture classroom is Hasbrouck 134.
- Page 1-32, Figure 1-6: The top right diagram should be
labeled A Δ B for the symmetric difference.
- Page 1-38, Problem 1.5.5 (a): "the exercise above" should
read "Problem 1.5.3".
- Page 1-45: in the next to last line, the capital S should
be small.
- Page 1-48, Problem 1.7.1: It is the Tortoise, not
Achilles, who refuses to accept Modus Ponens without more rules. Also,
he demands this in order to conclude q from p → q and p, not from p →
q and q.
- Page 2-16, Example: In the last line, both occurrences of "in B" should
instead say "in AB".
- Page 2-25, Excursion 2.7: In the proof of the first Theorem (also on the
Individual Handout for this term's Discussion #3), there are three places where
it says "Pal(u, v)" -- in each case it should say "Pal(uv)".
- Page 2-44, Problem 2.10.5 (a): B(x, y) should be defined as "team y was in the tournament at least as long as team x". As it stands it is not a total order because the winning team is never eliminated.
- Page 3-6, Figure 3.3: The node just above "1" is missing the label "3".
- Volume 2: Chapters 5, 9, 14, and 15
